wonder.

“ One of the most  terrible  l o s s e s
man endures in his lifetime
is not even  n o t i c e d  by most people
much less mourned

which is astonishing

Because what we lose
is in many ways one of the  e s s e n t i a l  qualities
that sets us apart from other creatures

I'm talking about
the loss of the sense of  w o n d e r
that is such an  i n t e g r a l  part of our world
when we are  c h i l d r e n

However

as we grow older
that sense of wonder
shrinks from  c o s m i c to microscopic
by the time we are  a d u l t s

Kids say ' Wow! '
all the time

Opening their mouths fully
their eyes light up
with  g e n u i n e  awe and glee

The word  e m a n a t e s
not so much from a voice box
as from an  a s t o n i s h e d  soul
that has once again been shown
that the world is full of amazing  u n e x p e c t e d  things

When was the last time
you let fly a loud,  t r u l y  heartfelt 'wow' ?

Not recently I bet
because generally speaking

wonder belongs to kids
with the rare  e x c e p t i o n
of falling madly in love with another person
which invariably leads to a  r e b i r t h  of wonder

As adults
we are not supposed to say or feel wow
or wonder
or even true  s u r p r i s e
because those things
make us sound goofy, ingenuous, and  c h i l d l i k e

How can you run the world
if you are in constant awe of it?

The human heart has a long memory though
and  r e m e m b e r s  what it was like
to live through days
where it was constantly surprised
and  d e l i g h t e d  by the world around it. ”
